This week it’s World Heart Rhythm Week – raising awareness for everyone out there suffering from arrhythmia. You can read all about it https://www.heartrhythmalliance.org/aa/uk, but we thought we’d focus a bit more on which nuts are nuts for your heart and general heart health as we feel this applies to everyone and is something we can all work towards improving!
When you think of Heart Health – what are the first tips that come to mind as to what you can do to make your heart healthier? Usually it’s: get more exercise, eat less red meat, and stay away from fat. Right? But bet you didn’t know that you could eat certain types of nuts in moderation to give your heart some added love too. Yup, it’s true. Nuts are great for heart health – just remember to always eat unsalted nuts, because too much salt is bad for your heart!
ALMONDS
Almonds have the magical ability to lower the amount of ‘bad’ cholesterol in our bodies. A handful or so of these are always a great idea! Not to mention the large amounts of fibre and protein that they contain (did you know that 5 almonds equal the same amount of protein as an egg?).
WALNUTS
Walnuts contain a high amount of a specific type of fat that can reduce the occurrence of plaque build-up in our arteries. Which means our blood pressure will lower and our heart will work better. They also, like almonds, can lower the amount of ‘bad’ cholesterol in our bodies, AND they can reduce the risk of getting Coronary Artery Disease! Can we say powerhouse?
PISTACHIOS
Not only are these little green beauties pretty to look at, they also have the ability to help your body handle stress better! It has been proven that people who eat pistachios react better to stress by their blood pressure not rising as much when they get stressed. So eat a handful of these guys to keep calm and carry on.
